Why Your Child’s Tennis Racquet Should Be Fitted by a Coach—Not Just Picked by Age or Height
When it comes to kids’ tennis, there’s one decision that parents often underestimate: choosing the right racquet. While many online guides offer age or height-based recommendations, the truth is—no two kids are the same, and those general guidelines are just that… general.
If you really want to set your child up for success, the best thing you can do is have their racquet fitted by a qualified tennis coach.
Why a Coach-Fitted Racquet Matters For Kids To Enjoy Tennnis
Every child develops differently. Some kids are stronger at tennis, some are more coordinated, and others are still growing into their movement. A racquet that works well for one 8-year-old might be completely unsuitable for another.
A qualified coach understands this. They see your child in motion, with a racquet in hand, swinging, rallying, and reacting in real time. That’s something a size chart simply can’t measure.
Here’s what coaches look for that age and height guides don’t:
✅ Swing Mechanics
Does your child swing with confidence? Do they struggle to control the racquet head? A coach can assess whether a racquet is helping or hindering your child’s technique.
✅ Strength & Coordination
Two kids of the same age can have very different strength levels. A coach will make sure the racquet isn’t too heavy, too long, or putting strain on the arm.
✅ Grip Size & Hand Comfort
Most kids don’t know if their grip is too big or too small—it just “feels weird.” Coaches check for correct grip size and hand position to avoid injuries and improve control.
✅ Stage of Development
A 7-year-old beginner might need a 21” racquet, while a 7-year-old with a year of lessons and a strong swing might be ready for a 23”. Coaches take this progression into account.
The Risk of Getting It Wrong
Using the wrong racquet can lead to:
-
Poor technique and bad habits
-
Arm fatigue or early injury
-
Frustration and lack of confidence
-
Slower progression in lessons or matches
What to Do Instead
🎾 Ask your child’s coach before buying a racquet. Most coaches are more than happy to recommend a size—or better yet, let your child try different racquets at training.
🎾 Take advantage of demo racquets. We have a selection of racquets your child can test during the lesson before committing to one.
🎾 Re-check sizing each year. As your child grows and improves, their racquet size may need to be adjusted.
There’s no “one size fits all” in junior tennis. The racquet should match your child’s game—not just their age. Trusting a coach to guide this choice is one of the best investments you can make in your child’s tennis journey.
At the Helen Rice Tennis School we ensure that the correct racquet is recommended from day one at our free trial lessons and give timely updates when a new racquet may be needed.
